I've heard it said often that mother means matter. This creates the justification for confining the Feminine Principle to an Earth Goddess, and prevents people coming to the Mother as Creatrix.
The words are similar, but let us look a little closer.
In Latin, the word for mother is mater, and for matter is materia. These seem so like each other, that it must seem that they are the same, but the suffix "ia" is a common Latin suffix, denoting a passive principle actualised by an active principle. That means materia is the principle actualised by mater. Matter is what things are created from, and Mother is the creative principle.
May She be with you,
David.
