Candlemas, of The Feast Of Lights, falls on 10th. Brighde, corresponding to 1st. February. It celebrates our Lady's promise to carry Her light into every part of fallen creation, even to the lowest regions and the regions of death. The light are the many candles of the festival. The altar cloths are white and the flowers are traditionally snow drops. All maids attending the Rite should be dressed in white.
This is a happy and sad occasion. Happy, because it is the means by which the material world was created, sad because it made it necessary for Our Lady to make Her Sacrifice. That means it is appropriate to do something penitential and something festive on this day.
May She be with you,
David.
