I have come to the conclusion that some people have a psychological need to invalidate the intellect.
I have noticed that, in some films, in order to make a woman frightening, they give her the appearance of intellectual detachment. A good example of this is a scene in the film Ninja Three - The Dominator.
In his book The Divided Self, R. D. Laing describes a case of a man who, every day, when at work, went into the toilet to masturbate. While doing this, he had fantasies of raping one of the women he worked with.
One day, when coming out of the toilet, he came face to face with the woman who was the object of his fantasies, and he felt that she knew what he had been doing to her in his fantasies, and this knowledge gave her power over him. From then on, he lived in fear of her power.
Knowledge is power. We fear the power of the intellect, and the root of this fear is fear of knowledge. We fear that intellect gives people knowledge of us, and therefore power. If we have some impurity, we feel guilty and fear punishment. The hippies popularised anti-intellectualism in the West, and they practised promiscuity. Because intellectual judgement requires detachment from the emotions, and intellectual people are less perturbable, we can gain the feeling that it is an inhuman power.
May She be with you, David.
