The ego is a well known Zen Buddhist concept. There is in Madrianism, a concept of the false self, which would seem to be the same thing, but there are important differences.
The Zen Buddhists see the ego as a separation from true existence, which contains no reality at all. The Madrians see the false self as a reflection of the true self. The truth is distorted and obscured, like looking in a dirty distorting mirror, but truth is there.
The false self can be made to reflect the true self with greater purity, gradually become more like the true self, and ultimately become one with the true self. The important thing about it is that those innermost fantasies and desires that we have are distorted manifestations of our true archetypal state. They are what we are destined to become. Examine them, and find out what they are manifestations of.
Think of your reflection in mirror. Is it real? In a sense, it is. IN a sense, it is not. Is it an illusion? It is only an illusion if you forget the real face it reflects. If you are aware of the reality, the reflection is no longer an illusion.
May She be with you,
David.
