The Egyptian God Set believed he had the right to rule because he was the strongest and had defeated the demon Apep. The animal used to depict him is something of a puzzle, because it resembles no known animal, but, if you look at the upright ears, they give the impression of energy surging upwards. Some academics think the animal is a greyhound with a camel's head, which is an animal combining short bursts of intense energy with great endurance.
An upwards surge of psychic energy does give a spiritual awareness, and people who experience it may feel that they are on the correct spiritual path, but the ruling principle is the Eye of Horus. Visual awareness makes the psychic centres open spontaneously and harmoniously, which is why it is the ruling principle, but some people disregard this in their eagerness for spiritual experience. This is why Set had seventy two followers. It is the method of kundalini yoga. The only God who supported Horus was Thoth, the God of knowledge, on the principle of rectitude. Even on the material level, it's of spiritual benefit to always look about you, and to act from vision.
The tall ears of an ass give the same impression as Set's ears. King Midas had these ears after declaring Pan to be a better musician than Apollo. Midas tried to exalt the lower over the higher. He also wished that everything he touched turned to gold. That caused his food to turn to gold, and he could not eat. The desire to force energy upwards causes loss of spiritual nourishment.
May She be with you,
David.
