Dear friends,
The reason why LSD became popular is because some people decided that LSD experiences resembled accounts of spiritual experiences. These people had not had spiritual experiences themselves. They had only read about them, and they did not take into account the difficulty of describing a spiritual experience to somebody who has never had one. When it became popular, exponents answered questions and responses by saying "It can't be put into words, and that proves you don't understand the spirit, because you don't understand that the spirit can't be put into words." They recognised that problem when it suited them.
When you have genuine spiritual experience, you can tell the difference between it and an LSD experience.
The Underground magazine IT published an assertion that mystics generate LSD naturally in their bodies, but they never gave the source of this assertion. We have to take it on trust.
Along with LSD came the belief that spiritual development does not require will, self control, knowledge or study, and is attained by overcoming the intellect, since these qualities are not required for LSD experiences. It causes some people to think they have to walk slowly everywhere.
In LSD experiences, we're easily frightened, we can't think clearly, and think daft things. These are not the results of spiritual experiences.
Along with LSD came cannabis. That has a weaker effect than LSD, so it does not have the "bad trips" associated with LSD, but cannabis experiences have a definite susceptibility to anxiety and a weakening of concentration.
An argument that was put to me for the spiritual benefit of cannabis was that at a party, people think they have to get up and dance, but people who smoke cannabis can just sit there. People who prefer sitting there to dancing have no vitality, and vitality is important. It give gives stability and concentration to the mind.
May She be with you,
David.
