Dear friends,
The last day of Moura is the Passion, corresponding to September 21st. It is the day on which Our Lady dies. The house fires are extinguished. In a traditional household, food is cooked over the fire, so only cold food can be eaten, which should include spiced buns marked with a cross.
It is followed by Hiatus, which is the day between the years, belonging neither to the old year or the new, corersponding to Septemer 22nd. It is the day on which Our Lady hangs lifeless on the World Pillar, when time stands still, and is a day which ritually does not exist. It is a strict fast, to be devoted to prayer and meditation. The altar cloth should be black, and all images and offerings should be removed. No work that is avoidable should be done, and it is said that any work begun on this day will fail.
It is followed by Resurrection, which is 1st. Columbina, corresponding to September 23rd. The fast is broken with hot, buttered bread rolls. The food of the day should include hard boiled eggs and chocolate eggs. The hard boiled eggs should be painted with images of the Fora and the Pentacle. Coffee, cocoa, and onion peel make edible paints.
Remember that in Madrian reckoning, America is the Far East, so, in America, you celebrate a day earlier.
May She be with you,
David.
