Dear friends,
Pure existence must be pure knowing and to know everything at once requires perfect harmony of idea. If every idea is in perfect harmony with every other idea then all existence can be contained within the single idea of existence. We have as the First Principle a state of perfect equilibrium not manifested into space. This argument is the justification of Goddess worship.
The manifest world is a state of disequilibrium, which is why it extends into space, but since all things are created from the primordial equilibrium they must contain the equilibrium in it. The equilibrium extends into the disequilibrium.
When a point moves it becomes a line. The World Pillar represents the descent of the point of equilibrium into the world. A cross is four lines radiating from a central point. A thread is a meandering point and a rod is a portable line.
The rods found by archaeologists are supposed to represent male deities by being phallic symbols but I find it difficult to believe anyone could worship a rod. We like to think of God as a person. A lot of people do not want to accept that there was a time when only female deities were worshipped.
The point of equilibrium manifests in the human state as the intellect and it is by means of vision that we gain direct knowledge of things. There is a connection between the knower and the known. In perfect existence this connection annihilates space and the arrow symbolizes this, which is a moving rod. The object of archery is to direct the arrow to a point. The word archery comes from the Greek arche meaning beginning or rule.
The power to destroy is a dangerous fascination. It cannot exist in the Spirit, which is a state of perfect existence. If any part of it were destroyed it would no longer be perfect. It undoubtedly exists in the world. That means there is something in the world that can be destroyed which cannot be destroyed in the Spirit. Since the Spirit is perfect the only thing it can be is that which causes it to be imperfect. (Unjustified destruction can only work against something that fails to withstand it.) Morality has a logical basis to it. The popularization of anti-rationalism in the '60's contained a rejection of moral constraints.
Strictly speaking you may only destroy what is false. From a spiritual point of view this is not actually destruction. When you bring light into a dark room it seems that the dark is destroyed but there was never any such thing as darkness in the first place. It is the absence of light and we see darkness only because we are unable to see light. If we become attached to darkness it will seem that the light is destruction. This is why we must avoid decadent influences because sooner or later we will have to meet the light.
The martial path is dangerous not because it is physically dangerous, that is the least dangerous part, but because it is morally dangerous. This is the real importance of courage; having decided the correct action we act upon it and take the consequences. The object of the chivalric ideal is moral and physical perfection. Dull iron may only become bright steel by passing through the fire.
Nobody can avoid moral decisions. The world is poised between Heaven and Hell and if we do not choose one we are left with the other. The farmer cannot neglect the weeding. The carpenter cannot shape without cutting but if he cuts the wrong side of the line the work is spoilt. If there is a miscarriage of justice law and order is itself criminal and somebody must have been responsible for it.
Morality is caused by the interaction of Spirit with matter and manifests in our lives through our fate which is the thread that we follow through our lives. Where one thread crosses another that is a reflection of the spiritual centre from which our existence comes and contains all possibilities, which can manifest into action according to the choices we make. If you want to make travel a contemplative activity think of every road or path as a reflection of the thread of fate and each junction as the spiritual centre containing the possibility of the available routes.
Correct moral action consists of discerning the choice that most reflects the Spirit. It is done by understanding the possibilities reflected into each decision so that we can act from the spiritual principles involved. There can be no spiritual progress without progress in knowing. This is the key to the problem of resisting evil without succumbing to the violent passions which created evil. Act from the equilibrium within.
May She be with you,
David.
