Dead friends,
Madrian have a teaching of symbolic meaning to the playing of games, a summary of which I give below.
Hopscotch, the spiral bed and the long bed:
The spiral bed has twelve stations corresponding to twelve months of a thirteen month calendar. The centre is the thirteenth month of Moura which celebrates the Divine Sacrifice. The dividing lines form a diagonal cross combined with an upright cross. The upright cross reflect the solstices and equinoxes, which correspond to the four elements, (Summer is fire, winter is air, spring is water, and autumn is earth.) and the diagonal cross the cross quarter festivals which are points of transition to reflect the turning of the year from the act of the Spirit upon it. The spiral represents the descent from Spirit to manifestation through a number of cycles, and the aim of the game is to to return from manifestation to the Spirit.
The long bed reflects the bridge linking the material world to the Spirit through a series of double squares alternating with single squares. Progress consists of uniting dualities to a unity, which becomes a new duality to continue the progress to the Spirit. The practice of throwing a stone into the first square to begin the course, and then in the second square to begin again, and so on until each course is complete reflects the principle that each stage of the journey is a microcosm of the whole.
Hide and seek, and tag and hoodie hunt (blind man's buff):
The hunt of the Spirit by the soul. Becoming the seeker by being caught in tag and hoodie hunt reflects the reversal of the soul seeking the Spirit to become the Spirit seeking the soul.
Fivestones:
The five stones reflect the four elements and the quintessence which contains the other four. The fifth stone is thrown into the air and the other four are gathered in, because it is only when the soul takes flight to the Spirit that the lower elements can be ingathered and united.
Follow my leader and Menous says (Simon says or O'Grady says):
These are obedience games. Obedience is important in Madrianism, because all positions of authority, including that of the mother, reflect the centrality of the Goddess to which we must all conform. Menous is regarded by the Madrians as the first law giver, and when the leader speaks in her name, she is to be obeyed, and, when she speaks in her own name, she is not, to discriminate between spiritual authority and worldly authority.
May She be with you,
David.
